Social Anxiety and Its Reasons
Social Anxiety
Disorder is a fear of social situations. This type of social anxiety
disorder may not have an underlying cause. There are various symptoms
associated with social anxiety such as blushing, sweating, trembling and
difficulty talking. Social anxiety disorder is very treatable and there are
several ways to cure this type of anxiety disorder. The most important thing is
to understand its causes, find out what triggers it and then learn how to
overcome those triggers.
There
is no clear evidence as to what causes Social Anxiety Disorder but studies
conducted by various universities in the USA have found several possible
factors. The most common theory is that social anxiety disorders arise from an
imbalance of chemicals in the brain. There are two types of chemicals: stress
hormones and non-stress hormones. When the level of non-stress hormones are
high, people tend to have anxiety disorders. The exact cause of this is still
unknown, although doctors believe that the imbalance is due to the fight or
flight mechanism that kicks in when the body senses danger.
Another
theory is that social
anxiety disorder develops when a person undergoes a major life change. If a
person has experienced a death of a loved one or a divorce, for instance, they
are more likely to develop social phobias. People who have undergone a
traumatic event in their lives also seem to develop this type of anxiety
disorder. It is also believed that some type of medication can trigger social
anxiety symptoms.
The
reasons why a person develops social anxiety are varied. One of the most common
reasons is that they suffer from low self-esteem and don't believe in their own
abilities. As a result, when they are put in a social situation they freeze up
and do not feel comfortable. Another theory about the reasons why people
develop social anxiety disorder is that they have developed a poor relationship
with their parents as a child.
Now
that we have mentioned the different theories as to the reasons as to why a
person develops social anxiety symptoms, let us discuss how these symptoms can
affect you. To start with, it can make your life extremely unpleasant. You will
most definitely avoid situations where you might feel nervous and embarrassed.
If this happens on a regular basis then your social life will gradually become
non-existent. Your relationships with your friends and family may suffer, as
they will not understand your behavior and will not feel comfortable around
you.
So
if you suffer from social anxiety, the first thing you need to do is consult a
doctor. They will be able to run a series of tests to discover the cause of
your social anxiety. Once the root cause is discovered, the doctor may
prescribe medication to help you overcome your problem. Remember that
medication does not cure social anxiety disorder. You will still need to work
on the problem by following the guidelines mentioned in this article to
overcome it.
